Box #3 in the "At Home in the Wild Trio"

Featured Artist: Kenojuak Ashevak

Picture
Kenojuak Ashevak is considered one of the greatest Inuit artists; her prints and drawings helped introduce Inuit art to much of the world. Kenojuak (pronounced ken-OH-jew-ack), spent her early years living nomadically in Canada’s Arctic regions; she developed her art from the embroidery that she learned as a child.  As an adult, she eventually settled in Cape Dorset on Baffin Island so that her children could go to school. There she became part of a group of artists who successfully developed and brought awareness to the unique arts and crafts of the region. Kenojuak  received many special honors over the years and traveled all over the world as an ambassador for Inuit art.

Kenojuak: A Documentary

This classic and poetic documentary filmed in 1963 follows Kenojuak Ashevak, the first woman ever involved with the printmaking co-operative in Cape Dorset, Canada as she transfers one of her stunning drawings to stone and prints it. A rare glimpse into the nomadic, creative and collaborative lives of Inuit artists. Directed by John Feeney - 1963 | 19 min
